EMDR Therapy for Trauma - Virtual Sessions Across Alberta

You've done the talking. Now it's time to process.

If you've been in therapy before and understand your patterns intellectually but still feel stuck, triggered, or overwhelmed in the same old ways, traditional talk therapy may not be reaching the parts of you that need it most. EMDR is designed to go there.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy approach used to help process trauma and work through patterns that talk therapy alone hasn't shifted. Using guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR is designed to support the brain in reprocessing distressing memories - often without needing to talk through every detail out loud.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works with how the brain naturally stores and processes memory. It doesn't require you to relive the experience in detail. Instead, it aims to help your nervous system work through what feels "stuck." As with any therapeutic approach, results vary from person to person.

Who EMDR Can Help

Research Supports EMDR For Individuals Who:

  • Have experienced trauma. Whether a single distressing event or ongoing/complex trauma

  • Feel like their anxiety, perfectionism, or low self-worth is rooted in something deeper than the present moment

  • Are cognitively aware of their patterns ("I know why I do this") but haven't been able to shift them through insight alone

  • Feel stuck in the same emotional loops despite previous therapy

  • Are navigating attachment wounds that show up in current relationships

What a Session Looks Like

Every EMDR journey starts with safety and preparation. We won't dive into processing memories before you're ready. A typical path looks like:

  1. History & Preparation - We talk through your history, identify target memories, and build coping tools you can use both in and outside of session.

  2. Processing - Using bilateral stimulation (guided eye movements or tapping), we work through targeted memories at a pace that feels manageable.

  3. Integration - We check in on how the processed material feels now, and build in grounding and closure before ending each session.

All sessions are conducted virtually, so you can do this work from a space where you already feel safe.

Tara's EMDR Training

Tara Carbone is a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) who has completed EMDR training through EMDR Consulting (2025). She integrates EMDR alongside Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) completed through Russ Harris's ACT for Beginners program and Internal Family Systems (IFS) principles, creating a layered approach that addresses both the roots of trauma and the day-to-day patterns it leaves behind.

This page is for general information and does not replace an individual clinical assessment. EMDR, like any therapeutic approach, may not be suitable for everyone, and outcomes vary by individual. If you are in crisis or need immediate support, please contact emergency services or a crisis line.
